Railway guard Christopher McGee yesterday lost his appeal for causing the death of 16 year old Georgia Varley. She was pissed and high on drugs at the time, and was leaning on a train when it moved away, falling underneath it.
I found it incredible that the railway guard was found guilty of manslaughter in the first place, I was even more amazed when he got 5 years in prison - longer than 35% of people convicted of murder in the UK last year.
I am now dumfounded and seething that an appeal judge has ruled the verdict "safe" and the sentence "in line with the law".
It seems to me that people are no longer responsible for themselves. This 16 year old was pissed and high and fell under a train - this would not have happened if she'd been sober. If people want to go out and get pissed that's fine, but they should face the consequences of their actions. The girl's parents should be in prison for letting her out pissed and high, not the railway guard.
I've also noticed a trend for convicted criminals that were drunk or high at the time of their crime being given lesser sentences than if they'd been sober. Being pissed or high should not be a mitigating circumstance at all. People choose to drink or take drugs, they know it could make them do something stupid.
Do you agree, should being pissed be a mitigating circumstance?
