I'd be interested to hear your views/experiences of these.
We're buying a new Smart TV this week- costing about £900 - so it can do everything.
They're trying to make me buy a 5 year guarantee- for about £100.
In the past I've always refused these as we're automatically covered for any faults in the first year anyway. But I'm getting serious domestic pressure  from the missus to buy one.
Have you ever bought a guarantee like this and had to use it - or did they just put the usual obstacles in the way of paying up.
Any thoughts or experiences. Is it worth it- or is it just a waste of money?

Personally, I think it's a rip-off. You get an automatic statutory 12 month guarantee with most electrical items anyway. If it lasts you five years and you never have any problems with it then you have saved yourself £100.

Not much goes wrong with televisions nowadays tbh.

Get your TV from John Lewis, they will match any price you get on the same TV.
Also they do 5yrs guarantee on all there TVs for free.

I agree with Magoo that John Lewis are hard to beat on new TV's.

P.S. Magoo, are your bi-focals insured?

But as I understand it John Lewis offer a depreciating guarantee- and don't replace like with like. Their guarantee depreciates at 20% pa. So if it packs in after 4 years I'd get a voucher for only 20% of the original cost.
Or so I've been led to believe.

I got that from another major electrical retailer. Perhaps they were just pulling the wool over my eyes

Even if it was true, i doubt it is, you would still be better of over the 5 yrs.

Just haggle over the price of the TV, I managed to get £50 off the sale price at Comet when I bought my Sony Bravia and my good friend managed to get £100 off an £800 TV. You can then get your 5 year guarantee and be almost no worse off.

I think they are pulling your pisser on that one mate, I have known a few people get their electrical goods from John Lewis and the 5 year guarantee is exactly what you get.

I never buy extended guarantees on anything. If anything goes wrong it will be generally be within in the first twelve months and touch wood, this has always been the case.
One scenario I do recall was a double glazing unit going belly up and the five year guarantee didn't apply with Fensa because the company concerned didn't register they'd gone bang hand I finished up changing it myself! Furthermore exactly the same happened with one of my mates and he recommended the company to me, Cnut!!

I agree with that Magoo, if you buy an I pad from JL you get a three year guarantee with that, so get it from JL and save some cash.
