I can't help thinking that the majority of scrotes in prison are of the layabout persuasion.

For the layabout, or dosser, prison must be a more pleasant experience than say it would be for your average fellow like me.

See the dosser, generally, one imagines, quite likes sitting at home watching tv, having cups of tea and coffee, lazing around, not doing much, having the odd smoke etc. These people do this out of choice when not in prison. So to be put in prison with a tv in your room, common areas with pool tables and drink making facilities, not to mention free food laid on in a canteen, cleaners doing their dishes, cleaning toilets, washing their clothes and so on - for these people this lack of independence and hours if empty time is not a punishment - its a holiday. its how they like to live given a choice.

In fact, its not even much of a sidestep for most in terms of socialising. Its their sort of person. They get put in there and hang out with plenty of like minded idiots and largely get in quite famously.

I think prison has to be different. It has to be hard. It has to be something people don't want to go back to.

I have spoken to ex prisoners who shrug and say "its not too bad" and im thinking, well why not? It should have been!

Should you be allowed to be gay in prison?

Putting a gay guy in a male prison is similar to putting a straight guy in a female prison isn't it?

For the straight guy one of the biggest deprivations will be not having any contact with the sex he is attracted to. Is it fair that a gay guy doesn't lose out in this way since he is housed in his own little dreamland- all men.

I really wish you wouldn't force your sexual fantasies on us.

Totally agree, prison is soft, bring back hard labour, no fecking tv and all that shit.

Prison is not easy, believe me, I have done porridge. I spent 8 months inside after taking on 6 bouncers all at once and putting all 6 of them in hospital. Prison is horrible, surrounded by scum bags with bad attitudes, having no freedom, thinking about people living their lives and progressing in life whilst you are inside doing porridge.
Anyone who says prison is too easy needs to experience it.

I've just read this again.

I'm still lost for words.

Prison certainly isn't a deterrent against crime any more - at least for most.
I knew a guy who was jailed in Qatar for 3 years and it killed him off after 2 although he was fairly old when he went in, but the spartan diet and the searing heat were too much for him. Nobody in Qatar thought prison was an easy experience and along with Sharia law ensured that crime was practically non-existent.
One thing about old-style nicks is that it massively reduced the burden on the taxpayer so that there was more money to spend on schools and hospitals etc - but they were inhumane.
A classic dilemma of human rights v net societal benefit.
