Used to own Horses/Ponies, always used to worry when my daughter went on the road, nowadays she occasionally rides out for the more timid rider.
Remember when she was younger, out on the fields with this Pony we had at the time, it threw her off and Galloped off, ran on the main road and crashed into a old couples brand new car. Thank god she was insured (silly Mare).
One thing i found out about Horses is they're f'king unpredictable and expensive... but we had some great times.

and why don't they use cycle lanes when there is one provided?
