A prank involving a smoke bomb has very rapidly ended the Chelsea career of young midfielder Jacob Mellis.
The 21-year-old has left the club by ‘mutual consent’ after the incident on March 2. A smoke bomb was activated in the reserve dressing room, leading to the evacuation of the club’s training facility at Cobham.
After an internal investigation, Mellis, who has made one sub appearance for the Blues first team, has departed Stamford Bridge. Another youngster, Billy Clifford, no relation to Irish Chelsea player Conor Clifford, has escaped sanction even though he was the one who brought the bomb in to the training ground.
