There is an unwritten rule in Jamaica that my friend shouldn't date my ex-girlfriend. I thought this was pretty universal, but I'm watching my favourite British comedy "Coupling" and there is quite a bit of that - Steve and Patrick are friends but Patrick was with Susan yet Susan and Steve end up together. Nobody seems to find that in any way odd. Is that how it works? Nobody cares about who was with whom?
