Wanderers were still smarting from Carling Cup final defeat to Middlesbrough when they travelled to Huish Park for the only previous time in the club’s history in September 2004.

Sam Allardyce’s side were mounting another challenge in the competition having fallen at the final hurdle seven months earlier, coming up first against league new boys Yeovil.

It proved to be anything but a simple affair for the much-changed Whites, who gave rare game time to the likes of Ricky Shakes, Kevin Poole and Blessing Kaku on the night.

Glovers keeper Chris Weale was in fine form, denying Kaku and Les Ferdinand in the first half to keep the scorelines level.

El-Hadji Diouf also wasted a golden opportunity, but with 10 minutes to go, it was Brazilian defender Julio Cesar who headed home from close range after Henrik Pedersen’s original effort had bounced off the bar.

The Dane then sealed the win with Wanderers’ second, a low drive from the edge of the box, to book a place against Tottenham in the next round.
