Wanderers Under-18s coach David Lee hopes his young charges can end their home league season on a high against Southampton tomorrow.

Two successive defeats against West Brom and Chelsea last weekend have dampened the mood of the youth team after an impressive run in the second half of the season.

But Lee is confident they can bounce back in their final clash at Lostock, kick off 11am.

And with in-form striker Jamie Thomas in the side, there is always a chance of getting the goals to win matches.

The 17-year-old forward has been amongst the goals virtually every weekend in recent months.

The Blackpool-born front man has been at the club for four years and has bagged 17 so far this season with just three games to go.

He is certainly one to watch in the future according to Lee.

The coach added: “Jamie has got 17 goals this season and is a natural goalscorer.

“He has lots of potential and I have high hopes he can progress because it’s a case of ‘once a goalscorer, always a goalscorer’ for me at any level.

“He has been with us since the U14s level after being at Blackpool before that and he has definitely been a plus point this season.”

It is not just homegrown talent, however, that Lee and fellow coach Tony Kelly develop.

They recently had young Liverpool teenager Nathan Burke in the side on a temporary basis.

The 18-year-old, who has been in the Reds academy since the age of 10 played four times for Wanderers in a bid to try to prove himself and make the grade for the U21s.

Lee was suitably impressed with his contribution but the Liverpudlian has now returned to Anfield.

The coach said: “Nathan was only here a short time but did well in the four games he played.

“He has gone back to Liverpool but he showed he has a lot of talent while he was with us.”
