The Gas fire, was brought up on the Coal Fire, what a bastard they were to get going, unless of course you kept them in overnight, by throwing Ashes over the top layer of Coal.

The Remote Control, fucking brilliant, till you lose the fooker.

The Microwave, didn't know i could cook till we got one of those.

Tesco Mobile did a poll last year of British adults to find what people thought were the greatest inventions ever.

This was the top 10.

1. Wheel
2. Aeroplane
3. Light bulb
4. Internet
5. PC
6. Telephone
7. Penicillin
8. iPhone
9. Flushing toilet
10. Combustion engine

I suppose it being a 'greatest inventions' list rather than a 'most important inventions' list explains what the iPhone is doing on there. And also that many Tesco Mobile customers have iPhones as the network offers very competitive deals on that handset.

Personally I would rank the printing press in the top 10, but it doesn't even make the top 100.

You can see the full list here:

Anyone who thinks the iphone, or any sort of mobile, is the greatest invention of all time needs to face a firing squad. Today.

I like my iPhone. When I speak to it, it speaks back, and doesn't tell me to sod off Very Happy

I have to say one of the all time best and important inventions is the radio, and all the subsequent spinoffs

The mobile phone is a fantastic invention, i don't know why anyone would say it wasn't.

To say it is doesn't demean other more important inventions, it's just a fact.

Yeah, but the fact the iphone is higher up the list than the actual telephone says it all really!

The principle is the same for both, its only the medium that is different.

That's debateable. The principle of speaking to someone else via a piece of equipment is the same, but the technology behind the mobile is radically more advanced. Mobile phones only gained mass appeal once they had become digital, too, whereas fixed lines gained mass appeal as analogue devices.

I think that telephones and mobiles warrant inclusion as separate inventions.

Agreed its more advanced, but the basic form, i.e. the standing wave signal, is the same in both. (landlines are also digital) Splitting hairs I know.

The internet is an amazing thing. Can any of us really say we could do without it?

I now hate the internet. Without it I wouldn't have been able to watch Bolton crumble.

Yep, and valves before them. Without thousands of them we wouldn't have had Colossus, the first computer.
