Having been handed his professional debut in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, defender Oscar Threlkeld admitted his delight at marking his first senior appearance with all three points.

Wanderers’ third academy graduate to make his bow for the club inside five days, the Bolton-born youngster completed the full 90 minutes in the right-back position as the Whites secured their fifth victory of the season on Yorkshire soil.

A proud moment for the 20-year-old, Threlkeld hopes that his performance against the Owls will prove to be just the beginning as he bids to turn out for his childhood club on a regular basis.

“I felt like it went well,” he said following the final whistle. “I just had to focus on the game – I had a lot of encouragement from my team mates too which helped massively.

“I felt as a back four we played well together – our distances were correct and even when Sheffield Wednesday kept coming at us, we stuck together and held them out.

“The movement of the boys was tremendous really – the gaffer had said that in the first 20 minutes we needed to push them high and that’s what we did and we were rewarded with our goals.

“We were really pleased, but all credit to Sheffield Wednesday because they came out and tested us in the first ten minutes and gave as good as they got, but we just defended well and hit them on the break which was ultimately the difference.”

With just one game of the campaign remaining against Birmingham City, the defender confessed his desire to introduce himself to the Reebok faithful this coming Saturday should the opportunity arise.

He continued: “It would be great to make my full home debut next weekend, but all I can do is get my head down and give my all.

“It’s just going to be a case of training hard all week to prove to the manager that I can do a job and hopefully I’ll be involved again.”
