TCQ were sampling at a time when creativity and restraint were more commonplace.bwfc1874 wrote:Sampling is an art form, I don't mean taking one song but when you take loads of little bits of songs and create something new it's brilliant. Any of Tribe called quests stuff for instance or J Dilla or MF Doom. It takes a hell of a lot of talent to create like that.

To be honest one piece of sampling I really did think was great was Enimen's Toy Soldiers where the whole chorus was taken from an old Martika song.
Puff Daddy, Diddy or whatever he calls himself this week did a pretty good one based on Every Breath You Take by The Police as a tribute to Notorious B.I.G that I liked too.
But for every good sample there's a Vanilla Ice
I don't think there's anything wrong with a certain amount of sampling as a sort of homage to older music provided it's done honestly and openly but when really rubbish artists basically rip off the whole song and claim it's new that does hack me off.

I won't hear a word against Vanilla Ice, if it hadn't been for him I would never have found hip-hop. When 'Ice Ice Baby' went to number one I loved it, so I went to X-Records in Bolton and asked the staff to recommend some hip-hop and so my love affair began.
Does X-Records still exist?

Couple of years old, but another modern music GENIUS for Breadman - Bonobo. Pretty well known now, I saw him live this year and he tours with pretty much an orchestra. Hugely talented.

Yes, but Talib's is sadly long gone, so you'll have to get your frocks from somewhere else next time you go shopping in Bolton.

Didn't Elvis die squeezing one out? (I fear we're descending into the gutter again).

So the story goes, Boncey:

This bit made me go "Euurgh!" -
“We found stool in his colon which had been there for four or five months because of the poor motility of the bowel.”
Five months' worth of poo all jammed up there!
Imagine that.......

That one's equally as bad.
What's the obsession with sticking a triangle part in every tune?
Is he an actual Bonobo monkey and just likes hitting things that make a clanky noise?

TBF there has been shite music in every decade I've lived through. Shite music didn't exist before the 1950s - just Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly and and Mozart on lead clavinet. God invented shite music just to torture me with and no doubt it will disappear when I pop my clogs.
