Newcastle United Under-18s 1 (Longstaff)
Bolton Wanderers Under-18s 3 (Cvetko, Thomas 2)
Newcastle United slipped to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Bolton Wanderers at Little Benton on Saturday in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League.
Two second-half strikes from Jamie Thomas gave the Trotters the points after Sean Longstaff had cancelled out Chris Cvetko's early opener to seal a scoreline which perhaps flattered the visitors.
It was Dave Watson's youngsters who began on the front foot, however, with captain Kyle Cameron heading Longstaff's corner over, and Luke Charman trying his luck from range, but it was David Lee's side who went one up with just 12 minutes on the clock.
Enok Elumba cut inside and laid the ball into the path of Austrian midfielder Cvetko, who unleashed a ferocious drive into the top right-hand corner of Freddie Woodman's goal, leaving the England Under-18 custodian helpless to prevent the opener.
The dangerous Thomas could have doubled Wanderers' lead soon after, dragging his shot wide after Tyler Garratt's lay-off before Luke Griffiths hit the side-netting with Bolton firmly in the ascendency.
United weathered the storm, though, and fought back to claim an equaliser just before the half-hour mark.
Tayshan Hayden-Smith won possession deep in their own half and released Jamie Holmes on the left.
The wide man managed to wriggle past his marker before delivering an inviting cross for the onrushing Longstaff, who buried his effort past Will Jaaskelainen - the son of former Trotters stopper Jussi.
And Newcastle could have gone into the half-time break in the lead, had Holmes not fired past the post after being sent through by Longstaff.
Thomas put Bolton back in front shortly after the restart but from there on in the Magpies poured forward in search of a leveller.
The industrious Jordan Storey went close with a powerful, rising drive and centre-half Cameron - a Scotland Under-17 international - saw his looping header drop onto the roof of Jaaskelainen's net.
It was the impressive Thomas who grabbed the third goal for Lee's young charges with 20 minutes remaining, as his fine footwork took him past Cameron and presented an opportunity to dispatch low past Woodman, which he did with aplomb.
Still United sought a route back into the game, and it was Cameron once more who went close, forcing an acrobatic save from Jaaskelainen with a free header.
His central defensive partner Ben Pollock hooked the resulting corner over the bar but, despite Newcastle's endeavour, they couldn't find a way to prise open a sturdy Bolton backline.
