Joe Mason admitted his delight at scoring a hat-trick in Bolton Wanderers’ 3-2 victory over Rotherham United, but reiterated the importance of building on the result against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
The forward became the first Wanderers player to notch a treble since Fredi Bobic in April 2002 as the Whites’ secured their first league win of the season.
And while Mason may feel he should have netted more than three, the 23-year-old is already targeting further goals as heads now turn to the weekend’s trip to Molineux.
“The lads have been giving me a bit of stick saying I should have got five or six and got two match balls, but I’m delighted with the three I got,” said Mason. “It’s the first hat-trick of my career but now I’m looking forward to carrying on and scoring a few more goals.
“I’d gone four games without a goal and I was thinking where is the next one going to come from, but tonight all the chances seemed to fall to me. I know I should have got a few more but now we’re focused on the next game.”
Mason continued: “We always felt that we were going to win the game. Unfortunately we’ve let them get the two goals but there was always going to be one team, I felt, that was going to win tonight and in the end we got what we deserved.
“The first win has been a long time coming but we’ve got it now. Now we look forward onto the next game which is Wolves away.
“It’ll be another tough one but it is one we are now going into with a lot of confidence.”
