Wanderers’ Under-18s slipped to a 3-0 defeat against their Liverpool counterparts on Saturday afternoon.
The Whites’ youngsters fell behind on 25 minutes, and despite rallying in search of an equalising goal, the Reds proceeded to extend their lead shortly before the half time break after capitalising on a mistake by the Bolton defence.
Not to be completely deterred, Wanderers reappeared for the second half with renewed vigour and almost found a route back into the clash as Jamie Thomas crashed an effort against the outside of the post, while a number of well-taken crosses by Spooner and Palmer caused problems in and around the Liverpool box.
Their efforts were to be in vain however as with just five minutes remaining, the Reds snatched a third to wrap up the victory and ensure that the Trotters left empty handed.
Speaking following the final whistle on Merseyside, David Lee explained that his side were ultimately second best on the day against the Reds’ youngsters.
“Even though we conceded early on, we proceeded to test Liverpool and were unfortunate to concede another on the stroke of half time which was a blow to us,” said Lee.
“Despite that though, we rallied in the second half and Jamie Thomas came close to bringing us back into it, but unfortunately it was just a bit too much of an ask for us in the end as they put the result beyond doubt late on.
“It was just one of those games really where Liverpool just had the edge over us in terms of the ability of their players.
“We’ll take positives from the game though and look to bounce back immediately when we welcome Stoke to Lostock next weekend.”
