Wanderers Under-18s narrowly fell to defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers at home on Saturday despite taking the lead through Christian Cvetko’s early opener.

David Lee’s side started the game brightly and quickly found themselves a goal ahead as Cvetko headed home Tyrell Palmer’s free-kick.

The Austrian could have doubled the young Whites’ lead soon after having found space six yards out, but was only able to fire into the side-netting.

Will Abbotts later found himself one-on-one but was unable to test the Wolves keeper, while Carl Kennedy could only volley over the crossbar from close-range.

However, Wolves made Bolton rue their missed chances as they turned the game on its head, first equalising before the break before a defensive error gifted them the would-be winner shortly after the interval.

The Trotters missed three good chances to level the scores during the second-half, leaving them unfortunate not to claim at least a point from what had been a hard-fought match.

Speaking after the final whistle, Wanderers head coach Lee said: “The players showed a great desire to press the opposition which had been our training theme during the week, forcing the opponents to give up possession in their own final third.

“However, there are fine lines between success and failure and unfortunately we did not have the defining ability to scores goals when the opportunities came along.

Bolton: Jaaskelainen, Spooner, Garratt, Phillips, Honeyball, Nolan, Palmer, Kennedy (Griffiths 65), Elumba (McKenna 75), Abbotts, Cvetko.

Now that the cream of the U18s has moved on to the development squad the results aren't so good, possibly because this lot of U18s are that few months younger. Concern is that U21s aren't exactly setting the world on fire yet.
