Having seen Bolton Wanderers start new manager Neil Lennon’s reign with a win, match-winner Matt Mills was pleased to clinch three points against Birmingham but promised there was more to come from the Whites.

The Bolton vice-captain leapt highest to convert Jay Spearing’s corner kick and head the Trotters into the lead midway through the first half.

It would prove to be the game’s only goal, leaving Mills satisfied with the win but fully aware that the hard work starts now.

“We worked hard this week,” said the defender. “I thought it was a fantastic performance from start to finish.

“We were a little bit disappointed with our display in the second half, but this is a fantastic win considering our situation at the moment.

Mills continued: “I thought we were fantastic in terms of pressing from the front, all the way through midfield and to the boys at the back, and obviously Lonners had made a fantastic save as well.

“The amount of second balls and 50/50s we won were massive. That’s what Championship football is about and that gave us a great foothold in the game.

“As the manager said when he came in, we’ve got 35 games which is a full season in a lot of countries and that’s how we’re looking at it. We’ve got 35 games to get as many points as we can. Today is a fantastic start but that is all it is; a start.”

Although pleased to score, Mills stressed how the result will always come first before voicing how important it is for Wanderers to not rest on their laurels ahead of their midweek clash with Charlton.

“It was nice to get on the scoresheet again,” said Mills. “It was a fantastic ball from Jay. I am pleased to score but the most important thing is the win.

“We’ve got a long way to go, and we’ve got a tough game against Charlton coming up. They’ve done well so far this season so it’s important for us to get a good rest over the weekend and then go again and be ready for them on Tuesday.”

Considering that McNaughton said the same thing - "Hardest week of training since I've been here", it does suggest Dougie was lacking.
