WANDERERS skipper Jay Spearing says new boss Neil Lennon has given him and his teammates a new lease of life — and he is loving it.
The midfielder led the side to victory in Lennon’s first home game against Brentford on Saturday — their second win in three games since the ex-Celtic boss took over.
The mood around the Macron Stadium was noticeably more upbeat than previous games this season and Spearing says the same is true at the training ground.
“I just think the manager has come in and given me a bit of belief,” he said.
“He has given me my confidence back; letting me do what he knows I can do.
“He has come in and given the lads a new lease of life. They seem to be taking his energy off him.
“You can just see around the place the belief and confidence is slowly coming back.
“With his backroom staff they have given the lads massive belief.
“The training is getting quicker, sharper and, touch wood, we’re on the way up.
“Training has been getting better and we are now starting to put it into games.”
It is not just Spearing benefitting from the new-found enthusiasm with the more attack-minded players shining in recent games.
And the captain, who made his 100th appearance for the Whites at the weekend, believes the club is on the up again.
He added: “It is not just me, all the lads have been given freedom to express themselves, especially going forward. It just seems to be flying out of everybody now, especially the likes of Chungy (Chung-Yong Lee).
“He has become a different player. He has stepped up and is going to cause a lot of problems.
“Even the subs who came on [on Saturday], especially Craig Davies... it’s a massive boost for him [to score] and he thoroughly deserves it.”
“Sparky (Mark Davies) is back from injury and scored a world-class goal.
“If he keeps himself fit, I don’t see why we can’t keep pushing up that table.
“He (Lennon) has just given a lot of belief and the licence to express themselves going forward.
“I’m the one who is supposed to get on the ball and let them go and play and score the goals and that is exactly what three of them did on Saturday.”
