Andy Lonergan has been reassured that his fine form will keep him at number one despite the impending return of rival Adam Bogdan.
Neil Lennon is happy with the former Leeds United stopper, who he picked out for special praise in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Brentford.
Hungary international Bogdan should be back in full training by the time of the next international break after several weeks on the sidelines with a fractured finger. But while Bogdan had the edge before his lay-off, Lonergan’s consistency since the Lennon’s arrival as manager just over a fortnight ago seems to give him the upper hand going into the end of the year.
“Andy Lonergan is playing well so I see no reason to change it,” he told The Bolton News.
“I’m very happy with the standard of goalkeeper I have inherited here.
“Andy has been absolutely excellent, a real rock, real composure, and then in Paddy Kenny we’ve got another outstanding goalkeeper and I like his character.
“Adam is a top keeper as well, so in that department we’re very strong.
Injuries have restricted Bogdan to just five starts this season - his last being the 1-0 defeat to Leeds United in late August - while Lonergan is now well into double figures after starting the last 10.
Both keepers see their contract run out at the end of the season although no deals are currently being discussed until the club climb away from the relegation zone.
Lennon is equally relaxed when discussing his recruitment plans, which are also on the backburner as he assesses all the options at his disposal.
Decisions will be made this week as games against Norwich, Cardiff and Wigan test the squad to its fullest – although the Wanderers boss refused to go into details at his press conference yesterday.
“We’ve made enquiries,” he said. “But I’ve made it a rule not to speak about anyone at any club publically until that player is sitting next to me.
“There will be a lot of speculation and I have spoken to managers, Phil has also spoken to chief executives, but there is nothing to report just yet.”
