Burnley's outside forward - John Connelly wrote:Bolton Wanderers had a big side and they had Tommy Banks at full-back. He was hard but I was lucky; he was just ending his career as I was starting. He was never fast and when I played against him he was even slower. Mind you, there was one game when I thought I’d switch wings with Brian Pilkington to get away from him. Then I looked across and saw who it was on the other side. It was Roy Hartle.  So I stayed where I was.

Peace be with you Roy Hartle.

(And our John)

Bolton Wanderers are saddened to hear of the passing of club legend Roy Hartle.

The 83-year-old passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in a local nursing home after a long battle with illness.

Roy, who regularly attended games at Macron Stadium until recently, featured 499 times for the club between 1952 and 1966.

He was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame and was a member of the Whites’ 1958 FA Cup Final winning team.

Our thoughts are with Roy's family and friends at this difficult time.

Neil Lennon leads tributes to Wanderers legend Roy Hartle

Tributes have begun to pour in for Wanderers legend Roy Harte, who died yesterday at the age of 83.

Wanderers boss Neil Lennon paid his own tribute to the former defender, who made 499 appearances for the club, including the 1958 FA Cup final.

“I didn’t meet him but I’m aware of his contribution to the club," he said. "First of all I’d like to pass on my condolences to his family and his friends.

“The word legend is bandied about quite often but its fitting for him because his career and his contribution to this football club was huge.”

Former team-mate Syd Farrimond also hailed "a real gentleman" who formed one half of the famous full-back duo of Hartle and (Tommy) Banks in the famous side at Burnden Park.

Farrimond, another Wanderers legend who played alongside Hartle in the early stages of his own Bolton career, said Hartle was a man to be feared on the pitch and respected off it.

"He was a hard player but a real gentleman off it," said Farrimond who played 404 games for Wanderers between 1958 and 1971.

"They don't make them like that anymore, that's for sure.

"When Stanley Matthews came to Burnden Park, Roy put him down the strip along the side of the pitch and Matthews just shook his head.

"He was our union man, and when he told you to pay you paid. And he was a very nice man."

Really sad this - he was my hero and favourite in that team. He was quick, talented and hard as nails - everything our current backs aren't. RIP.

No that was Ray Parry if I remember correctly.

Yes it was Ray Parry that had the newsagents on Newport Street. Roy "Chopper" Hartle and Syd Farrimond were the full back pairing when I started going to Burnden in 1963. Roy was getting on a bit by then and had certainly slowed down a lot but he was still hard as nails. Any winger who took any liberties with Roy ended up in a heap on the dirt track that surrounded the pitch.
