Wanderers have given their blessing to Watford to “sub-let” Keith Andrews in the January transfer window.
The 34-year-old midfielder has been frozen out by the Hornets’ Serbian boss Slavisa Jokanovic after a bust-up and told he will not feature for the club again.
According to reports at Vicarage Road, the Whites have turned down a request to terminate the loan, with Watford contractually obliged to fund half of the player’s wages until the end of the season. But if Andrews can find another club willing to pay the same amount in January, Wanderers would give their blessing to the move.
It is a tough situation for the former Republic of Ireland international, who insists he was “in the dark” over Jokanovic’s decision to drop him. His last appearance came in a 2-1 defeat to Derby County last month, his 11th of the season.
Andrews was then told he could no longer train with the club – a decision which has been met with some confusion among Hornets' fans.
He spoke highly of his loan spell at Brighton last season but with Sami Hyppia’s situation far from secure at the Amex Stadium, a return seems unlikely.
The former Wolves and Blackburn Rovers midfielder has an excellent reputation within the game, particularly at Championship level, but with Financial Fair Play reducing his options, finding a club willing to fund to the tune of a reported £12,500-a-week could be a tough task.
And that task appears to fall on the shoulders of Andrews’ representatives or Watford, with Wanderers distancing themselves on the matter over the last couple of weeks.
Neil Lennon has a surplus of central midfielders at his disposal and said last Thursday he had not had any contact with Andrews or his agent.
The Northern Irishman currently has Neil Danns, Darren Pratley, Jay Spearing, Liam Trotter, Josh Vela and Medo Kamara who can play in the middle of the park, with Chung-Yong Lee and Eidur Gudjohnsen plus injured pair Max Clayton and Mark Davies, able to play in a more advanced midfield role.
