Neil Lennon says he has been delighted with Eidur Gudjohnsen’s contributions and that he hopes to have the evergreen striker around come the start of next season.

Gudjohnsen, 36, returned to Bolton almost 15 years after initially departing the club, signing a deal for the remainder of the season back in December.

He has since gone on to net six goals in a total of 20 appearances, as well as re-establishing himself back in the Iceland national team.

And speaking in his pre-Norwich press conference, the manager said Gudjohnsen’s capture ranks as one his all-time top transfer acquisitions.

“Eidur has got better as the season has gone on, which has certainly pleased me,” Lennon said.

“Obviously, he didn’t have a pre-season and hadn’t played much football for a while before we brought him in.

“It was always going to take time for him to get up to speed. Some people were maybe wondering whether he would ever get up to speed at his age.

“But he’s been fantastic. He’s a brilliant player and has had a brilliant influence on us both on and off the field.

“He’s one of my best signings, and I include in that all of the ones I’ve made at Celtic over the years.

“There was never any doubting his qualities, the question was whether he could sustain it and he has certainly done that.

“We want him around next season, there’s no questioning that.”
