Eidur Gudjohnsen could follow in the footsteps of his ex-Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard and be a golden oldie at 36.

That’s the view of Wanderers boss Neil Lennon, who played well into his mid-thirties for Celtic in the SPL and Champions League.

“Frank's playing for Man City and he's played for Chelsea - the big teams,” he said.

“We're not a big team in the Championship but we're hoping that Eidur can have an impact here.

“I played in the Champions League when I was 36 and I wasn't as fit as some of these guys.

“It can be done. I don't see age as a major problem. I just look at the footballer and what he can bring to the team. Eidur brings a lot of quality to us.”

Gudjohnsen impressed with some classy touches off the bench for Wanderers in their 0-0 draw against Ipswich Town on Saturday.

“Eidur is someone who will make a difference,” purred Lennon after the game.

“It's not a gimmick or a PR stunt. You look at a player and you think can he make us better?

“There's no doubt that we feel Eidur can once he gets to the pace of the game.

“He's 36, which if you look after yourself you can still play in the modern game.

“People talk about 30 being old which is ridiculous really.

“It's not Premier League but I've played against players in the Champions League who are nearly 40 and that's the highest level. Eidur's played there, he's in good condition and you never lose the footballing ability.

“He will make us better.”
