Neil Lennon wants to show fans he means business in the transfer market and snap up an early summer bargain.

Accepting Wanderers supporters may be lacking inspiration after a season of struggle, Lennon wants to make a signing as quickly as possible to get the town talking again.

Of course, that will be no mean feat. The Northern Irishman does not yet know what his playing budget will be next season and hopes to get a firm answer on that front in the next couple of weeks.

But he does know the calibre of player he is looking to attract to the Macron Stadium and believes he can secure the right signings without breaking the bank, if need be.

“I think if we can get a bit of movement going in the next few weeks it’ll prick people’s attention a bit and show people we mean business,” he told The Bolton News.

“The next few weeks will be really important. We know what type of player we want to bring in and have been working for a number of weeks now to get that ball rolling.

“I think you need a certain type in the Championship – and they are out there. It isn’t a hard sell to bring them to Bolton either.”

Wanderers hold out hope they can convince Craig Morgan to reject a deal from Rotherham United and move across the Pennines this summer.

The Wales international has been earmarked as a potential replacement for Matt Mills but is currently negotiating a new contract with the Millers and has voiced his desire to stay with the club if the right offer is made.

Lennon could yet find his coffers are swelled by outside investment – still somewhat of an unknown quantity.

But even if that does not materialise, the manager remains upbeat about next season.

“I’m sure some of the players are glad this season is over but from my point of view I would have liked to work longer with some of the players who have been out injured,” he said.

“And that gives me a lot of positivity for next year.

“Clayton, Clough, Pratley, Wheater, Craig Davies, they are important players, but it’s keeping them healthy and on the pitch.

“I’m planning a long pre-season and I think that gives me the opportunity to really get some work into the players and make sure they come back fit.”

Lennon is also planning to bring back every player on the books this summer for pre-season training.

The likes of Conor Wilkinson, Jay Spearing, Alex Baptiste, Rob Hall, Andy Kellett, Sanmi Odelusi and Tom Eaves should link up for a pre-season fitness camp, which is likely to be abroad.

“Whoever comes back in this summer will be in the group for pre-season,” he said.

“I want to sit down and talk. There will be players leaving, there will be, I’d imagine, bids for some of my players as well. We’ll consider that.

“But this summer is about what I can add to this squad, whether I can make that core better.”

A quick signing won't happen. How can it when he doesn't even know how much money he'll have for fees and wages? Gartside and the board should have been able to tell Neil that a month ago if not more. Once again our board is playing the usual slimy game of letting the manager make statements of intent that they have no interest in letting him keep.

I agree. I was surprised to hear that Neil still doesn't have a clue as to his budget. I would have thought that would have been sorted by now, unless he's just keeping his cards close to his chest so the expectations of the fans don't get out of hand, if that's at all possible.
