LONG-TERM Wanderers target Craig Morgan has performed a shock U-turn by signing for Wigan Athletic.

Chased by Neil Lennon for a number of months, the former Rotherham United defender was officially announced by the League One Latics yesterday on a two-year deal, subject to a medical.

Morgan had been ear-marked as a potential replacement for departing skipper Matt Mills, and looked odds-on to sign with Wanderers after announcing his intention to leave Rotherham when his contract expires on June 30.

Sources close to the player insisted the deal was on course to be completed last week despite a lack of recent dialogue, and it has also been suggested Morgan was at the Macron on Thursday afternoon to finalise his move.

But the 11th hour collapse prompted him to accept an offer from recently-relegated Wigan, and drop back down a division.

“We knew Craig’s contract was up and he may be available, and this was somebody we were very interested in bringing to the club,” said Latics boss Gary Caldwell. “We are delighted he has chosen to join Wigan Athletic.

“He has great experience, having played internationally but he also knows the division inside out. He is a quality defender, a real leader on the pitch who has been a captain, with a superb attitude and we are delighted to have him on board.”

Meanwhile, Adam Bogdan has penned an open letter to Wanderers after completing his move to Liverpool yesterday.

“I would like to say thank you to Bolton Wanderers for giving me the opportunity to fulfil my dream and become a professional football player in England. It was eight years ago when I first came to the club and I feel Bolton have helped make me the player I am today.

“I have to say a thank you to all of my coaches during my time at the club, as every one of them has contributed something towards my game. A huge thank you also goes to the fans. I have fond memories of you all and it makes it really hard to leave the football club.

“However, I have been given a fantastic chance in my life to join Liverpool Football Club and I would like to make the most of this opportunity. I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my career, but I will never forget the time I have spent at Bolton.

“I wish everyone associated with the club all the very best.”
