Tom Thorpe is in line to make his Wanderers return well ahead of schedule this weekend at Peterborough.

Phil Parkinson has confirmed the 23-year-old, on loan from Rotherham United, is back in contention after making a successful return to training.

Thorpe’s comeback comes just three weeks after he suffered ankle ligament damage in the 2-0 win at Millwall.

There were concerns within the camp that the former Manchester United could be out until the New Year – with Parkinson even looking into the free agent market for a temporary replacement.

But after making encouraging progress on the training ground in the last seven days, Thorpe should be in the frame for the televised game at London Road.

In more positive news for the Whites, skipper Jay Spearing is not far behind Thorpe on route to recovery.

Specialists initially ruled the midfielder out for four weeks after finding a tear in his groin but Wanderers have kept a close eye on his condition and the influential 27-year-old could be back in action much sooner.

Parkinson was forced to rest Gary Madine, Mark Beevers and Mark Howard on Tuesday night in the Checkatrade Trophy defeat at Cheltenham because of minor injuries but is happy to report his options are improving.

“Gary is fine, he trained a little bit of Monday and we’ve been careful with the groin problem he had, Tom (Thorpe) is back in training now and it’s good to have him back,” he told The Bolton News. “Mark Beevers had a problem with his toe, Mark Howard had a dead leg. So we had a few niggles here and there but hopefully they should clear up.

“Spearo is making progress too, so hopefully we should have a good few players back.

“I must stress, it’s important we have got options in the next couple of weeks because we have got a tough run of fixtures coming up.”

Parkinson was nominated for the October Sky Bet Manager of the Month alongside Graham Alexander (Scunthorpe), Mark Venus (Coventry) and Neil Ardley (AFC Wimbledon).

Zach Clough also earned a player of the month nomination alongside Billy Sharp (Sheffield United), Erzun Ozthumer (Walsall) and Joe Bunney (Rochdale).
