Prison Suicides

It's been reported this week that inmates taking their own lives has hit record frequency levels and the equivalent of one prisoner every three days is committing suicide. 

The thing is, I can't bring myself to feel sorry for, or have any kind of empathy for anyone who is stuck in prison through their own doing. Prisons are understaffed but that just makes me feel for the employees, not the prisoners. Complaints of being locked in cells for 23 hours a day and living in shit conditions. Well it's prison ffs. If you don't want to be locked up and miserable, don't do the crime. 

Nothing is black and white of course. The inmates with mental health problems should be put in appropriate places to address it, and I feel sorry for the families who have to deal with the fact they've lost a loved one and even feel sorry for the prison guard who is confronted with the sight of someone hanging, but as for the prisoners themselves I couldn't really give a shit. If you can't hack it doing the time then don't do the crime - simple.

Am I being harsh or should we give a shit what happens to the arsehole that's locked up for good reason?
