PHIL Parkinson has played down the significance of Wanderers’ 3-1 friendly defeat to Guiseley last night.
The Vanarama North side coasted to a surprise win at Nethermoor Park against a Bolton side with strong first team representation.
Parkinson insists the physical workout was paramount, even if he was disappointed with aspects of his team’s defending early in the game as they went 2-0 down.
“We started slowly, kicking up the slope, and conceded two goals,” he told The Bolton News. “They are a big, strong, physical team – typical Conference North – with power at the top of the pitch, and they gave us problems. But it was a game I wanted to get more minutes into players, and we did that.

“Every pre-season you’ll get a result like this. We want to win every game but it was a decent workout because they really wanted to win it too. It was competitive.
“I said at half time that if you start slowly at any level of football and play square balls across your penalty area, you will put yourself under pressure.
“We played three of them, and the third resulted in Guiseley scoring a goal. That’s what happens when you put the ball at risk.
“Guiseley stepped on to us and closed down, so credit to them.”
