Cheltenham boss Wade Elliott: We had the 'better chances' 16425662

Cheltenham boss Wade Elliott says his side didn’t try to “shut up shop” during their 1-0 defeat at Wanderers.

Kyle Dempsey got the decisive goal 10 minutes from time, finding the bottom corner with a pinpoint strike from outside the box.

Elliott felt the late goal was harsh on his side and claimed they had “the better chances” against the Whites.

The 44-year-old said: “My initial thought is disappointment. I think if you were a fan who travelled up to watch it, in terms of performance it would be everything you’d want to see. It was committed, resilient.

“I didn’t think they troubled us too much in all honesty. Someone has just showed me the stats. I think we have had more possession, more shots. We have created the better chances in the game.

“I haven’t seen it back but it feels like possibly the only time in the game they have got a shot at goal without having to really work.”

He added: “I don’t know how many teams would come here and have more of the ball. Defensively, we were really solid.

“But the flip side of it, when we had our time to take the ball in we used it well. Will’s (Goodwin) header, Alfie (May) has had one, Sercs (Liam Sercombe) has had one.

“Looking at the quality and the chances in the game, they all fell to us. It is a bitter one to take, but we have to be resilient. We have to take it on the chin and keep moving forward.”

Wanderers have now won their last three matches in League One and remain fifth in the table – only behind fourth-place Derby on goal difference.

Meanwhile, Cheltenham find themselves in 18th place and have failed to win any of their last six league fixtures.
