Phil Brown's verdict on Bolton Wanderers' League One season 16153733

Former Wanderers coach Phil Brown believes they should be considered one of the favourites for the play-offs.

Brown was on commentary duties at the Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon as the Whites ran out 3-2 winners thanks to goals from Shola Shoretire, Dan Nlundulu and Aaron Morley.

Ian Evatt’s men had already secured a top six spot and will now face Barnsley over two legs as they aim to book a return to Wembley.

Despite Evatt making eight changes against the Gas, Brown was impressed with what he saw from Wanderers.

The 63-year-old singled out Dan Nlundulu and Randell Williams for praise after their performances off the bench.

He told BBC Radio Manchester: “The eight (who came into the side) put a marker down. Did one or two impress more? Absolutely.

“Nlundulu came off the bench, he impressed me. Randell Williams came off the bench in unforeseen circumstances.

“He went into a position that he’s not used to as a left-footer and did he put a marker down? Absolutely. Cameron Jerome, he put a marker down.

“I thought George Thomason went in and out of the game. When he was in, he was absolutely different class. When he was out, he was a passenger and he has got to be in the game for 90 minutes.

“There are lots of boxes have been ticket by the manager, he knows these players better than anyone. Going into the play-offs, you have to say they are one of the favourites.

“I know people will be saying Sheffield Wednesday because they finished third, but Wanderers have come in at the right pace and the right time.”

Wanderers head into the play-offs in good form, having lost just one of their last 10 matches in all competitions during the business end of the season.

“A job well done in terms of what Wanderers were trying to achieve. That’s 81 points now, which is synonymous of a very, very good season,” Brown added.

“They go to Barnsley in a two-legged affair with their tails up. Barnsley have got to worry about them as apposed to the other way round.”
