Barnsley interim boss determined to put Bolton on 'back foot' 18047285

Barnsley interim boss Martin Devaney reckons they need an early goal to put Wanderers “on the back foot”.

Devaney, who has taken charge of the last couple of games after Neill Collins’ sacking, wants his players to approach the game with belief.

He admits they need to cut out the errors that proved costly during the first leg at Oakwell as Bolton secured a two-goal lead.

“We have to believe in ourselves,” Devaney told Barnsley Chronicle. “Our away form has been fantastic this year and that can lead into Tuesday nicely.

“Bolton are a good side. They just finished outside the top two and they have really good individuals who can hurt you.

“It will be a similar gameplan but we have to get that early goal and put them on the back foot. We have to cut out the mistakes and try to attack them as best we can.

“I just have to be really positive with the guys and get them believing we can go there and win. We are the underdog, it is 3-1 but stranger things have happened.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s remarkable comeback against Peterborough last season shows anything can happen in the play-offs, and Devaney is refusing to throw in the towel.

“It is half-time,” he added. “You saw the play-offs last season, what other teams did from 4-0 down, it is still all to play for.

“I said to them, ‘Heads up, chests out and we go again’. If we get that early goal we can make it a hell of a game.”

The points were shared when the sides met at the Toughsheet Community Stadium in February, with Zac Ashworth cancelling out Devante Cole's opener.
