It has been reported today that the NHS are looking at charging foreigners who seek treatment in the UK, £200 for the privilege. If they have lived in the UK more than 6 months they will be expected to stump up £200 annually.

It is estimated that the NHS spend £200 million per year treating foreigners. As one spokesperson pointed out, " It's called the National Health Service, not International Health Service."

Providing that the process of deciding who is a foreigner and who isn't doesn't cost more than the potential savings, it seems a sensible and fair deal. After all, taxpayers pay for the NHS so why shouldn't foreigners who use the service?

One would think that this is a reasonably uncontroversial proposal but I expect objections from doctors who won't like having to ask their patients about their nationality and from the usual bleeding heart liberals who think we should provide the rest of the world with free medical services.

A few sidenotes with regards to this.

Anyone from any of the other EU countries will not have to fork out - just like we do not fork out when we visit any other EU country (thanks to the E1-11, or whatever its called nowadays).

A foreigner staying 6 months or more in the UK will probably be working in the UK (99%), and as such actually paying National Insurance and Tax so, basically they are being penalised TWICE for being non-European.

The Doctors and Nurses will have added work with finding out of a foreigner is a foreigner or not - isn't that actually down to Border patrol and not teh medical profession!!!

What about those staying less than 6 months - arn't they the true people they should be targeting as they wil normally just come over for the visit and operation etc and then leave again all within 6 months!!!

This seems very flawed, as usual, by the Government.

You mean Holiday Health Insurance?

If you do then yes, just like we should when holidaying outside the UK (even if it just in the EU we are meant to have Holiday Health Insurance as well as the E1-11)

Well then problem solved?

Unless they're charging illegal immigrants ?

But it is NOT legal to have Holiday Health Insurance and sure enough its not even asked when entering the UK or any other country. It is like I don't actually have Insurance when travelling to The Netherlands or vice versa when I over there visiting the UK.

How can you enforce it - the medical staff shouldn't because it is not their remit, the police cannot stop and fine people. The only people who should are the Border Force but how far stretched are they at this moment in time, staff wise, due to recent Public Sector cut-backs!!!

If they've no insurance do what they'd do to us, visiting another country without LI.

You are right, if they are not EU members they should pay. I have no idea why there is a six months element.

Yes there is a practical problem with asking doctors to establish who should pay but it is not insurmountable - most other countries seem to manage this.

And yes the UKBA is fucking useless. But even if they do find some illegal immigrant Somali rapist he will not be sent back due to our absurd concern for what awaits them in their country of origin. If you commit a major crime in this country you should be sent back even if they are going to torture you before burning you alive. You've made your choice.

My mother used to visit me in the US and was told by her travel agent that she 'had' to buy travel insurance in case she got sick. This is not true and they are actually stealing money from people if they tell you this. If you get sick while in the USA you go to the nearest hospital for treatment. It is 'illegal' for any hospital in the USA to refuse to provide medical treatment to anybody - and that includes the 11 million illegal imigrants currently in the country.

Correct it is not legal to have insurance. But either way if you do end up having treatment you have to pay teh full amount. Therefore it is better to have insurance as with the insurance you can claim the money back, whereas with no insurance it is basically money lost.

I currently pay National Insurance which covers me in teh UK and also still paying my Health Insurance in The Netheralnds (currently €220/month/person and that is the mid-price with cheapest being €170/month/person and expensive being €425/month/person)

No hospital in the USA is going to pursue somebody in Europe or anywhere for an unpaid bill. Hospitals inflate the bills they give to insured patients and use the extra to cover uninsured people.

Point is unless they have a system of sorting out who qualifies and who doesn't it will be a mess. It could end up costing the NHS more to vet eligibility for free treatment than they save.
