From what I've read over the past few days the notion that there's only one interpretation is false. Aside from the Sunni & Shia's there's also how old Arabic is interpreted which leads to differences. As you say though the whole thing is complete bollocks but it's not going anywhere, hardening attitudes towards all Islamic people is only going to make things worse IMO.
It could be argued I'm sure but I think it'd be pretty hard when you consider the kind of life Mohammed led and his teachings.
like unfaithful women are to be stoned to death, thieves hands are to be cut off, women are to be commanded and beaten, enemies to be dismembered, aggressive expansion and war lust, paradise for martyrdom.
And Mohammed is the one true messenger of God, I simply don't understand how you can interpret his words in any other way than that it is the word of God, to do so would be to know the mind of God which no one can do, and it would be contradicting the prophet himself.
Every person of faith varies in how strictly they apply their religion, I know Sikhs who shave, Muslims who drink and Catholics who use contraception. So maybe interpretation isn't the best word, but how you apply the teachings of an outdated book to your modern day life is up to each individual. Hence 'extremists' are few and far between in the UK.
I get all that, I just don't understand why someone would deem to alter the word of God thats all. That would be to suggest God got something wrong and living in that way would be a sin.
