Wanderers could be running low on firepower for this weekend’s eagerly-anticipated FA Cup clash with Liverpool.
Neil Lennon looks like being without three key attacking players for Saturday evening’s fourth round trip to Anfield.
Craig Davies is almost certainly ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained in last weekend’s hard fought 2-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday, while the club are expected to make a statement on Chung-Yong Lee’s fitness tomorrow morning.
Since returning from international duty in Australia the Korean star has had two scans on his right leg to determine the extent of a hairline fracture sustained at the Asia Cup – but the chances of him featuring against Liverpool remain low.
Lennon’s hopes of having starlet Zach Clough involved in the cup game will also hinge on medical advice, with a scan on his hamstring injury expected to take place today.
The 19-year-old enjoyed a superb debut against Wigan Athletic in the previous round and is back on light training duties with the first team.
But it is understood Lennon will not risk aggravating the problem long-term and potentially losing the youngster for upcoming Championship games against Rotherham and Wolves.
So with Clough’s involvement also looking an outside bet, it leaves experienced pair Emile Heskey and Eidur Gudjohnsen, plus youngster Conor Wilkinson as the only fit out-and-out strikers in the squad.
Wanderers remain in the hunt for attacking reinforcements but after losing out on Lloyd Dyer and Diego Fabbrini last week, they are not currently expecting to have any new faces on board by this weekend.
Meanwhile, Paddy Kenny has joined Championship rivals Ipswich Town on a short-term contract after his release at Wanderers.
The 36-year-old did not feature once for the Whites after arriving in mid-September as cover for Andy Lonergan, following an injury to Adam Bogdan.
The former Sheffield United and Leeds stopper spent a short time on loan at Oldham Athletic but the fact his contract was not renewed could indicate that Wanderers are willing to keep hold of Lonergan and Bogdan until the end of the season as contract negotiations continue.
Mick McCarthy was quick to bring in the experienced Kenny at Portman Road to provide some cover for injured keeper Dean Gerken alongside Bartosz Bialkowski.
Meanwhile, former Wanderers trainee Adam Blakeman completed a move to Scottish club Ayr United yesterday after a successful spell at non-league Hyde United.
