Adam Le Fondre will join Wanderers on loan from Cardiff City next week.
The 28-year-old striker had been poised to join Huddersfield Town until Neil Lennon made his interest known.
The Whites must wait until January 30 – the date Joe Mason’s loan officially ends – to complete the deal because they cannot have two players on loan from the same club at the same time, and already have defender Kevin McNaughton on the books.
Le Fondre boasts an enviable scoring record in the Football League and netted a hat-trick for Reading against Wanderers last season in a 7-1 hammering at the Madejski Stadium.
He scored 41 goals in 110 appearances for the Royals but has not reproduced that form since moving to South Wales, scoring just three goals in 25 games.
