Burnham was exposed last week for daily piffling amounts for travelling less than 2 miles. the total cost for the year amounted to £38.

Hang on then......so what are we saying?

He's a twat because he didn't inflate his expenses claim?

Bit harsh, surely?

How can they claim mileage for cycling? It doesn't cost them anything and keeps you fit.

I don't know about you Breadman but I would be embarrassed at submitting an expenses claim for less than £1. When you consider that M.P.'s have an annual salary in excess of £70,000 and claim even more than that in annual expenses I think they should set an example by tightening their belts like the rest of us are constantly being told to do.
And as Barb says, how can you justify an expenses claim for a bicycle ride?

You are perfectly entitled to claim mileage allowance even if you cycle to work.

Loads of self-employed people do it.

It's to offset depreciation.

It's legal, so why should AB be penalised just because of the job he does?

We're all quick to have a go at politicians for employing double standards, so why should we, the public, be allowed to do the same?

He should be lauded for cycling instead of driving round in a gas-guzzling car, not criticised for trying to be environmentally responsible.

I used to work away a lot, usually in Chesterfield. I'd claim mileage for the journey from Manchester to Chesterfield and back. Driving from the hotel to place of work was about a mile, I never bothered claiming mileage for the small journeys because it was to much paperwork.

I used to do it all on-line and it's a piece of piss.

You can set a template up and just re-submit the same sheet every week.

I claimed for everything - bog rolls, staples, every meal allowance, shoes, laptop, the lot.

If the tax man let's you do it, get it claimed for, I say.

You can't always claim for the direct cost but you can claim tax relief and it does mount up.

I used to get £30 a week travel expenses, but walked to work.
Feeling a bit guilty I told my boss, who simply replied,'Cool, use it for boots'. Cool

I probably would have claimed if i could do it online but had to write down how many miles I had done daily so never bothered.

Would have only been about 10 mile a week and that was the only money I spent when I worked there because everything else was paid for. I'd go on a Monday with a fiver in my wallet and come home Friday with a fiver in my wallet.
