Neil Lennon says his side will improve in the final third, after Wanderers’ pre-season defeat away at Morecambe on Friday evening.

Trialist Stephen Dobbie gave the Trotters the lead with a well-taken finish, but the hosts rallied and eventually came out on top.

And speaking after the game the admitted there were areas his side must improve on before the season’s opener on August 8.

“It’s another game under our belts in which there were some good passages of play,” he told bwfc.co.uk. “We hit the bar and post and should have scored more than the one.

“For the amount of possession we had, our play has to improve in the final third, and I’m confident it will do.

“Derik made a mistake for the winning goal, but he’s the least of my worries. That was his first game in English football and it’s important he continues to bed in.

“There are still lingering areas that we need to improve on, because we kept failing in the final third.

“At this stage we are also still mixing and matching the teams up to ensure everyone gets some football. I think it is at this stage now we’ll start looking at a lot more of the senior boys playing.

“Stephen too his goal well. I think you can tell he’s not played a lot of football over the last year or so, but he’s a very good footballer. He’s not done his chances with us any harm at all.

The game also saw a first appearance in a Bolton shirt for another trialist, former Charlton full-back Lawrie Wilson, who made an appearance from the bench in the second half.

“Lawrie is another one we’re having a look at,” Lennon continued. “He has an offer from another club, but he’s come in training with us for a while and I thought he did okay for 30 minutes.

“Hopefully he’ll get a run out against Oldham on Tuesday night, because right-back is an area we’re definitely looking at.”

Poor Neil. He's having to trot out garbage for the media, but probably thinking we are very deep in the poo and it's his job - and reputation - are on the line.
