Ref watch: Scott Duncan to oversee Wolves clash

Scott Duncan will take charge of Wanderers’ clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday as the Sky Bet Championship resumes after the September international break.

The Northumberland-based official will be overseeing his third match at Macron Stadium, having run the rule over Brighton & Hove Albion’s visit to BL6 in March 2014, and the Whites 3-1 victory over local-rivals Wigan Athletic in November last year.

Last season Duncan handed out 83 yellow cards and three red cards from 36 matches last season, while this year he has dished out 18 cautions from his six outings so far.

Christopher Akers and Ollie Yates will run the line, while Graham Salisbury is the fourth official.

Will be a tight game with little between them. Wolves marginally better than us.

We'll win this 3-1, this is the game where it all comes together, Madine won't score mind.

Preview: Bolton v Wolves

SETTING THE SCENE
Bolton host Wolves in a clash of the Wanderers at Macron Stadium on Saturday as the Sky Bet Championship resumes after the September international break.

Having drawn 0-0 away at Blackburn Rovers in their last league outing, Neil Lennon’s side are still in search of their first victory of the season – though they did beat Motherwell 2-1 in Keith Lasley’s testimonial last weekend.

In contrast, Wolves come into the match having won their last outing 2-1 against Charlton Athletic, and with strikers Benik Afobe and Adam Le Fondre both keen to impress against their former employers.

TEAM NEWS
With Dorian Dervite suspended after being sent off against Blackburn Rovers, Derik Osede (ankle) could be in line to make his Wanderers debut having come through last week’s friendly with Motherwell unscathed.

Liam Trotter (hamstring) could also come into contention after turning out at Fir Park, while recent signings Jose Manuel Casado and Paul Rachubka will also be in the squad but Francesco Pisano is not yet ready to make his maiden competitive appearance for the Whites.

Max Clayton (knee), Darren Pratley (ankle) and David Wheater (calf) are all nearing first team returns but are not yet ready to feature.

LAST WOLVES XI (v Charlton Athletic, W2-1)
Ikeme, Doherty, Golbourne, Ebanks-Landell, Hause, Edwards, Henry, McDonald (Ojo 62), Coady, Dicko (Le Fondre 62), Afobe (Wallace 88).

ONE TO WATCH
Having notched eight goals for Wanderers whilst on loan at Macron Stadium last term, Bolton fans will be more than aware of the threat which Adam Le Fondre poses.

Known for his goalscoring exploits throughout his career, the striker started out with his hometown club of Stockport as a youngster, before later enjoying prolific stints with Rochdale and Rotherham United.

Later signing for Reading, he spent three seasons at the Madejski Stadium, helping the Royals win promotion to the Premier League in his first year at the club.

Moving on to Cardiff City at the start of last season, Le Fondre spent the latter part of the 2014/15 season with the Whites, before moving on to Wolves on a season-long loan last month - scored his first goal for Kenny Jackett’s side against Charlton Athletic last time out.

I was quite happy with todays perfoprmance. The defence seemed to cope well although Wilson kept going missing. Clough and Davies played well ad Da Silva was a threat.
Madine was always involved- even if his skill level leaves something to be desired. Amos was as good as anything that Bogdan could have managed.
Add a decent striker and we'll be fine this year. We won't be promoted but we'll be in better shape than we were last year

Report: Bolton 2-1 Wolves

IN BRIEF

Wanderers ran out 2-1 winners over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Macron Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Following a bright start, the home side opened the scoring through Liam Feeney in the 17th minute, with Zach Clough doubling the Whites’ advantage from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time.

Former Bolton loanee Benik Afobe did halved the deficit halfway through the second period from the spot, but the strike ultimately proved to be a consolation as the Trotters held out for the victory.

TEAM NEWS

Derik Osede came into the backline for his Bolton debut in place of the suspended Dorian Dervite, while Under-21s defender Alex Finney was included amongst the substitutes for Wanderers.

FIRST HALF

Wanderers began strongly, with Wellington Silva winning a free-kick just outside the box in the opening minute which Zach Clough headed narrowly wide while Liam Feeney fired into the side netting shortly after.

Bolton’s dominance continued, with Gary Madine causing problems for the Wolves backline early on as he narrowly eluded connecting with a Feeney ball into the box.

The visitors were finding themselves virtually imprisoned in their own third of the pitch, although the pace of former Bolton man Benik Afobe was evident on the rare occasions that they ventured upfield.

Having run proceedings from the outset, Wanderers were eventually rewarded with the opening goal of the match in the 17th minute as Feeney collected a lofty ball, turned in the area under pressure and slotted home past Emiliano Martinez.

No more than they deserved given their efforts, the visitors almost had an immediate equaliser against the run of play as Ethan Ebanks-Landell headed goalwards only to be denied by the fingertips of Ben Amos.

Bolton were soon back in the ascendancy however, with a lack of control just outside the area denying Wanderers a second through Clough with 24 minutes gone.

The tempo of the game did temper slightly as the half wore on, with either side’s respective keepers enjoying a period where they weren’t called upon.

With seven minutes of the half to go, Wolves were finding more space in Wanderers’ third but on the whole, were failing to trouble Amos in the Bolton goal.

James Henry, who scored a memorable equaliser against the Whites last time out at Macron Stadium, almost drew Wolves level again with three minutes of the first period remaining, only to see Amos push his drilled effort over the bar.

On the strike of half time however, Wanderers were handed the opportunity to double their advantage from the penalty spot after Wellington was fouled by Ebanks-Landell, with Clough slotting the resulting kick past Martinez with ease to ensure Neil Lennon’s side went in at the break two goals to the good.

SECOND HALF

With no changes at the break for either side, the second half began with a period of pressure from the visitors as they won a succession of corners.

This time saw an injury to Danns which kept the midfielder on the floor for a couple of minutes while he received treatment, with him eventually being withdrawn and replaced with Josh Vela.

The delay in play brought down the tempo of the clash once more, although Feeney almost doubled his own tally with a diving header after good work from Clough to play him in.

Adam Le Fondre almost marked his return to Macron Stadium with a goal in the 55th minute, but the striker somehow put his shot wide when it seemed easier to score.

Up the other end of the field though, Wanderers were pushing in a bid to extend their lead with Madine coming closer to breaking his goalscoring duck with two glorious opportunities from close range.

In the 67th minute however, Wolves were handed a lifeline after Prince was deemed to have fouled Le Fondre in the box with Afobe firing home from the spot to halve the deficit and bring Kenny Jackett’s men back into the clash.

A goal which came against the run of play, they almost had an equaliser five minutes later as Amos misjudged the flight of a cross into the box, with Afobe feeding David Edwards who somehow slotted wide of an open net.

The introduction of Emile Heskey with 18 minutes to go in place of Clough saw Wanderers push forward once more, with Madine firing over the crossbar after a well-timed run from Davies into the area.

With time running out, Wolves pushed forward in a bid to force a leveller with Edwards coming close with a shot from distance while Heskey was denied whilst in on goal by Martinez after another excellent Davies run.

As the game entered its final five minutes, both sides were going all out to find the back of the net in a bid to either ensure victory on Bolton’s part or earn a share of the spoils for Wolves.

With two minutes left, it was backs to the wall stuff from Bolton with Wolves piling on the pressure as Amos denied Le Fondre from a matter of yards out.

As five minutes of additional time were indicated, Madine was handed the chance to put the result to bed after finding the ball at his feet following a lofty cross downfield, but he put his shot wide under pressure.

Wolves also threw men into the box late on, but their efforts were in vain as Bolton held out for all three points.

Tinned Toms - You know it makes sense!

Davies is looking the class player we know he can be. If he can stay fit he'll be massive for us this season. He put at least 3 chances on a plate today, none of them were put in the net. Not difficult to see where our problems lie. Madine can't finish for shit, neither can Heskey.

Agree Mark Davies playing a captains role, not just his skill (sublime at times) but he's putting a foot in so good on the eye. just keep him fit. Prince so strong granted he may make the odd bad decision but a great signing.

Thoroughly enjoyed the match. Not sure how encouraged to be about the performance, good as it was.

Take out Clough, Davies and Silva and you've got a side that's not gonna average more than a goal a match, which is worrying when we know Davies will probably only play half the season and Clough has had a few injuries too. Madine is obviously the new Elmander/Ngog/Beckford, i.e. yet another striker with no confidence or composure whatsoever in front of goal.

Whatever you think of Clough and Davies, they're the sort of players you wanna see coming on when you're 2-0 down and fucked off with life. Then there's Gary Madine. And nearly every other "creative/attacking" player we've had over the last ten years or so.

Madine gives 100% which I like, but how a professional footballer can be so shite in front of goal is always beyond me. And the fact that plan B (Heskey) is also fucking useless at shooting straight makes me want to throttle Neil Lennon.

I would be amazed if Lennon doesn't bring in a recognised striker very soon.
