Could someone please enlighten me re the famous George Oghani Ironing Board story. Seen it referred to a million times but what actually went down.

When I first heard it, it involved him simply getting nicked in B&Q for robbing an ironing board and chinning a security guard on the way out before running off.

Hence #Legend.

But like most good tales, it appears to have evolved over time.

If you google "George Oghani ironing board" you get hits (largely from Burnley and Blackburn fans) which include the key words "window locks, ironing board, speedboat, 2kg of coke, killed Chris Pearce with one punch, Kennedy Zapruder film, global warming, twat, Bolton bastard (yeah!) and that thing with the dog".

I honestly think we'll never know the full truth.

But he did leave us under a cloud after he allegedly got caught rifling the other players' stuff in the changing rooms at Burnden so it's probably all true.

Wasn't it a bag of screws that he nicked ?

From a Clarets (Spit!) website
He's still probably best remembered for an incident in a DIY store that led to an arrest and an association with ironing boards. George was buying an ironing board but attempted to steal a bag of screws. Detected by security shall we say he used the ironing board to defend himself? Even at Wembley there were special George Oghani t-shirts with him emblazoned across the front with an ironing board.

It was Asda in Longsight Manchester where he 'forgot' to pay for some window locks and a security guard tried to nick him. He used a disguised surf board to fend the screw off.

What about the Chris Pearce thing?

Did he actually take his head off?

He left Burnley for trying to take Pearce's head off his shoulders but I think that he only broke his jaw.

Chris Pearce was a star for us (unfortunately not for his goalkeeping).

Training ground bust up with Pearce getting a "Facial injury" and George never played for the Burnley again. Shuffled off to Cyprus. Sounds a bit of a character.

181 games and no goals - you're right.

Very poor return.

I think I met him once when I worked for Endsleigh at a junket in the board room after a pre-season game on't Turf in't th'early 90's.

I passed him a pint at the bar and he dropped it.

And then kicked it out for a corner.

I'd have him back at Bolton tomorrow.

Seriously.

Spearing wouldn't last more than 2 minutes.

George Oghani's finest moment (video 3.06 minutes in)

This game is still one of my favourites as an away fan. We were a division below Preston and didn't stand a chance after a 0-0 at home. Preston fans had been booking hotels and getting coaches ready for Wembley. I was in the first pen acting like a hyperactive child full of blue smarties.........

Ray Deakin, George and Compo.

Three of ours in there.

Tidy finish from Public Enemy No1 by the way - tucked it away well.

And unlike Whittam, I actually played on that plastic pitch in a charity match.

Imagine a mix of sand, gravel and those wire brushes that you use for stripping paint.

The scar on my arse is still visible 30 years later.
