WANDERERS boss Neil Lennon says young defender Derik Osede will have to learn on the job – and quickly – if he is to adapt to the rigours of Championship football.

After a bright start to his career at the Macron Stadium and positive displays against Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday, the 22-year-old was brought back down to Earth with a bump on his first away outing at Huddersfield on Saturday when a second-half collapse saw Lennon's men beaten 4-1.

It was the heaviest defeat for Bolton under the Northern Irishman since losing by the same scoreline at both Derby County and Nottingham Forest in February.

The result was compounded with a late red card for Derik at the John Smith's Stadium, ending his personal misery early.

The former Real Madrid youngster and his defensive colleague Prince-Desire Gouano were given a torrid time by ex-Manchester City front man Ishmael Miller and struggled to cope with the striker's physical approach.

But Lennon hopes the former Real Madrid youngster will learn from the experience once he returns from his one-match suspension.

"He has got to learn quickly," Lennon told The Bolton News.

"We know we have been a bit lightweight without Dorian Dervite and David Wheater but the two of them (Derik and Prince) have been doing very well.

“But he (Derik) couldn’t handle the size of Miller and you can’t let players bring the ball down and turn like he did.

“We also need to be stopping the source, defending from the front a bit better instead of jogging around.

"But when your centre-halves are struggling then you are not going to get results away from home."

Lennon now faces a selection dilemma, with Derik unavailable for Saturday's visit to the Macron of unbeaten league leaders Brighton.

Dervite remains sidelined with a ligament problem while Wheater is only just back playing development squad football.

But after Wanderers' horror show at Huddersfield, it may not just be in the centre where Lennon shakes things up with summer signings Francesco Pisano and Jose Manuel Casado pushing for first-team action.

The Whites boss said: "He’ll (Pisano) have to come into consideration because (full-back) Lawrie (Wilson) was poor – he didn’t get up to the standards he’s set recently.

“Pisano shouldn’t be too far away but Dean Moxey was probably the only one to come out with any credit from the back four."

Good to see Lennon picking out individuals for criticism.

Isn't it! Gives the impression he's on their case and everybody is in contention - although in the article about considering Spearing and Vela he didn't say why Vela was out of the team. Promising though.

I'm sure the former Real Madrid youngster will come good
