Forgotten man Tom Eaves could soon be back on the Wanderers radar.
The striker, now in the final year of his contract at the Macron Stadium, is recovering from surgery on a chronic hip problem that has plagued his development for more than 12 months.
Eaves was on the fringe of a first-team breakthrough in 2013 under Dougie Freedman following successful loan spells with Shrewsbury and Bristol Rovers.
But after it failed to materialise, the former Oldham Athletic man saw his form slip on a return to the Shrews, and consequent loans at Rotherham, Yeovil and Bury as the hip injury became more of an issue.
Neil Lennon is now expecting the 23-year-old back in the fold in the next couple of months and hopes the youngster can get his career back on track.
“Tom's had surgery and is just doing his rehab now,” the manager explained. “He shouldn't be too far away from getting back on the training pitch.
“We'll have to gauge how his rehab goes and how he is. He'll come back into the fold once he's fit and we'll have a look but it's difficult for him as he's had a hip problem.
“He's doing most of his rehab at Lostock. He's not a million miles away but whether he remains part of our plans remains to be seen.”
Eaves was signed by Owen Coyle in August 2010 after scoring a hat-trick for Oldham against Wanderers in a pre-season friendly.
The burly Liverpudlian finished the 2012-13 season with 13 goals for Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury and was rewarded with a handful of appearances in the Championship under Freedman.
A flood of offers came in to loan Eaves the following season but he failed to recapture the same form and fitness issues forced him on to the periphery.
Wanderers are hoping he can now get back and prove his fitness in the development squad, potentially gaining more loan experience elsewhere.
