Wanderers have completed the signing of midfielder Jem Karacan, subject to international clearance, but could be set for more good news.
The former Reading midfielder will not be in contention for today’s clash with AFC Wimbledon but will sign a contract once given the green-light.
Assistant boss Steve Parkin says the 28-year-old has got quickly up to speed and could be involved in next weekend’s crunch promotion game at Fleetwood.
“Jem looks a fit lad, he’s done well in training, the gaffer knows him better than me but he’s a tenacious midfield player who I think could be good for us,” he told The Bolton News.
“He looks up to speed. Nick (Allamby) says he has come through all the tests so far, so it’s just a matter of getting the clearance.
“We’re waiting for the thumbs up. A couple of the lads know him, he’s different to Jay – who has got all the attributes you’d want in a midfielder – but he goes after people, he’s hard working… A Jack Russell!”
While the exact length of Jay Spearing’s injury lay-off had not been confirmed by the time The Bolton News went to press, it is understood Darren Pratley is also nearing a first team return.
Spearing tweaked medial knee ligaments in the 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers but his absence could be eased with Pratley making excellent progress on his recovery from a fractured his ankle sustained on the opening day of the season against Sheffield United.
Wanderers feared their club captain was out for the season after he needed an operation to remove scar tissue from his ankle but a return to action has not been ruled out before the end of the campaign.
Parkin is keen to see the Whites return to something like their old selves for the Dons’ visit this afternoon.
“The physicality in the Bristol Rovers game wasn’t enough from our players,” he said. “We need to get back to what we’re about, which is hard work. Yes, we have quality, but running, competing, working is what has got us here. Let’s see where it takes us.”
