Wanderers should find out in the next 48 hours whether takeover talks involving former club captain Dean Holdsworth will come to fruition.
It is understood the one-time £3.5million striker has discussed investment in the club on behalf of his company Sports Shield Consultancy and could now be in a position to make a firm offer.
Doubts had been cast behind the scenes at the Macron Stadium as to what kind of financial clout Holdsworth had behind him – particularly to instigate the radical changes that were being suggested earlier in the week.
Holdsworth accelerated the excitement among supporters on Tuesday night by stepping down from his manager’s role with Ryman Premier side Brentwood Town.
He continues as a director of football for the Essex outfit but cited “other commitments” as the reason for leaving the hands-on position after five months.
Holdsworth is listed as sole director at Sports Shield, whose offices are registered in Droitwich, and also serves as director for three other companies.
The company was incorporated in July of this year under Sports Shield Investments Ltd and is understood to provide financial advice to individuals and clubs within the game, including insurances.
It seems highly likely any attempt to buy into Wanderers would be funded by outside parties and The Bolton News understands the company is looking for a complete takeover.
Further clarification could come to light by the weekend – although legal issues currently mean both parties are unable to comment in public.
Whites owner Eddie Davies has touted the club for sale with reports often quoting a £30million asking price.
Substantiated information on any outside interest has been thin on the ground, although the club went to the pain of issuing a statement denying they had spoken with a consortium from Ireland back in May.

Rumours of interest from Russia, India, the Middle East and Israel have all swirled round without incident or firm indication an offer has been made.
Meanwhile, Leeds United have made an enquiry about Northern Ireland international Kyle Lafferty – a player recently linked with a move to Wanderers.
“It was just a call to ask about the availability of one or two players that Alex has,” said manager Steve Evans. “And Alex Neil I know is like myself, he’s a grafter. Alex is a friend and when he gets a minute and a decision he will call me.”
