You can access on demand from the TV channels such as BBC iPlayer, Channel 5 & 4, YouTube, Facebook (if you do any of that), on demand movies you pay sky for as well as some subscription based entertainment channels and sky sports.

With an Android box that you would connect to your TV in the same way, you can do the same although the android system it runs on is more open for content to watch and use as it is independent unlike Now TV.

You would still be able to watch all the on demand services and also Netflix but also be able to download an app called Kodi which would allow you to view movies and TV shows and other services that may interest you etc, you would also be able to view online sports streams similar to how we all do it on a PC but with having the comfort of watching them from your sofa.

It is a bit of a mind field when looking to purchase one of these as they start around a mere £15 and really are shit. You would be looking at spending around £60 for a good one that would give you smooth viewing.
What's this Kodi KP?  is it similar to mobdro?
I'm not sure as I only started looking into these a few months back as we have dumped the Sky service and TV tax (don't want to support the BBC's pedophile ring).

With Kodi, you can play media from your network device such as home server but also able to play content through the internet on it as well.

What is mobdro?  Smile

Well that's another app that Wander could use. Smile

karlypants wrote:Wander do you not have a smart TV? If so and it is a decent one, you can generally get the Netflix for it along with NowTV.

If not you can get a NowTV box that will plug in the back of the telly (subscription required) that goes through your broadband.

Have you ever thought about Virgin Media broadband? If you can get it in your area, the phone line is an optional extra.

Edit: there is an offer here on the NowTV box with 6 months entertainment pass for £19.99.  See link here Smile
Cheers KP.

We just bought a Sony Smart TV and plugged the Sky box into it. Beyond that I know nothing.
Does you mean I don't need a Now TV box or a Nano Box if I just plug the telly into t'internet?

I.e. does the smart TV do the same stuff as the boxes?

And if so, do I need to download anything?
If your Sony Bravia has the Andoid smart function (some 2015 models) then you will be able to download the app through the TV.

It seems that the Now TV service is available on LG model smart tv's as well as Andoid TV boxes so far.

Let me know the model number of your TV, your bank sort code, account number, pin number for your bank card, your full address, your mothers maiden name and your inside leg measurements and I will check for you. Smile
Smile
The model number is 49X8309C

I'll PM you with my inside leg measurement later...

So am I right in thinking that the gist of it is....

I'll need an internet connection (which means BT in Aylsham)
The TV should be able to pick up the main stuff via the Internet
A nano box would expand the choice, do searches for what is available and present the options in a way that even I can understand

If so, is there any point in getting a BT TV package or would all that stuff be available anyway if I just plugged in the telly and a box?

Wander, it appears that the smart function that is built into your telly is based on Android.

Get yourself a google AppStore account (if you don't have one already) and have a play around with it. Smile

I have a Google account - but how do I get stuff off there on to my telly? Do I log in via the telly and then download stuff to the telly?

And will that cover it/is there any point in getting a nano box too?

Yes and it's worth trying this before splashing out cash.

Cheers for all your advice KP (& Johnny)

Just to confirm the last point i.e. no point in getting a BT package

My dad is now after one of these as he wants to watch UK TV (he doesn't live in UK) so I'm looking at getting an M8S box that is fully loaded and setting it up for him.

The one I'm looking at is here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UK-4K-M8s-Quad-Core-Android4-4-Smart-TV-Box-Fully-Loaded-XBMC-KODI-Free-keyboard-/391223652088?

Wander, I will let you know how it is mate. Smile

I've just recently delved into turning an Amazon TV firestick (which was £25 on Black Friday weekend) into a Kodi device. Basically you get to stream all a lot of online feeds (including Sky Sports, BT Sports, PPV etc) for free. This is all done using Kodi software. - Which is the same as what you are refering to KP, but on a less powerful device (I think). I am currently streaming BT Sports Europe.

I also just discovered a few days ago you can use the software on a PC and do the same thing. So before you go and buy one of these devices, just test it yourself first.

Here are the required links:

Download Kodi: http://kodi.tv/download/

Once this has been installed you can then add apps - there's plenty of youtube videos explaining how this is done.
