Fans are being asked to pledge their allegiance to a Bolton Wanderers Supporters’ Trust.
Membership to the trust has been set at £10 for the year, although payment will not be taken until the trust is officially registered with the Financial Conduct Authority.
The recruitment drive has already been backed by the likes of John McGinlay and Kevin Davies and proved a hit on social media last night.
More than 300 people have already volunteered their time and skills and they are now being sorted with the help of Supporters Direct into a steering group. They will then undertake the election process to form a board which is fully voted by its members.
Further applications of support are also being invited through the website bwfcst.co.uk It is not yet known what level of involvement the trust would have at board level but Chris Peacock, speaking on behalf of the group who have helped to set it up says nothing has yet been ruled out.
“It will depend on situation at the club,” he said. “At the moment we're setting up as a voice for fans. If the opportunity arises to do what Portsmouth did and have a controlling interest then certain steps would have to be gone through. Right now we need a trust because we need a voice for supporters at the right level.”
The three men who have worked on the steering group for the trust, Peacock, Ian Bridge and Mike Smith conducted a question and answer session with fans on The Bolton News website to explain what happens next after last Wednesday’s open meeting.
All three men confirmed they would not be standing in any forthcoming elections but would continue to work towards setting up a committee.
If Wanderers were to go into administration then Football League rules state that administrators must talk to a Supporters Trust within 21 days about the sale of the club.
“If the worst were to happen then we need numbers to prove to them that we are a viable option,” Peacock added. “If everyone in that meeting the other night invited one more person to pledge their support, we could have 2,000 people.
“Let's be ambitious so we could demonstrate we are a viable and credible option to be involved in that process.”
