Agree with both of those comments above.

Don't know if either of you have watched this series or any of his other work before, but I think you'd find it really interesting I certainly have particularly with it being made in 2004 and all that's gone on since.

I would also recommend a book which is a devastating analysis of western failures in Afghanistan called The Good War: Why We Couldn't Win the War or the Peace in Afghanistan by Jack Fairweather.

People have been invading Afghanistan for 150 years (we've had a couple of goes) and nobody's ever cracked it and they always come off worst.

You'd have thought they'd have learnt by now.

Sluffys comment was spot on if you ask me.  Our moral values and ethics  we take for granted are nothing more than societal values which we follow in order to fit in.  Look at our grandparents, we don't consider them bad people but I bet they thought the death penalty for gays was ok, or at least a law against it.  And I am sure our great grandparents would mostly have taken blasphemy very seriously indeed.  And go a little further back perhaps and they would have been burning people at the stake for so called religious crimes.

As much as it feels like it there is no inherent right and wrong.  Just what society deems normal at the time.

The East are just a couple of generations behind in their thinking.

Not all of them, and what gives the rest of them the right to change, through violence, other peoples way of life ?
The first step to an intolerable future, is when people accept, or explain away, the actions of these incredibly barbaric people, and practices.

Indeed not all of them. But what is worrying is that apart from the obvious barbaric behaviour of IS, etc is recent developments in places like Turkey. This used to be a secular Muslim country but under Erdogan it is becoming increasingly intolerant and moving backwards.

Also you cannot ignore how disastrous the western invasion of Iraq proved. I am sure the average Iraqi was a lot better off under Saddam than they are now.

Some of it I agree with, but not the assumption that it was all down to Western governments against a 'peaceful' religion. Yet again, an apologist, still looking for the good in the situation. Unfortunately, there isn't any.
