Liam Trotter acknowledged Bolton Wanderers need to improve after their away day blues continued at Brentford on Tuesday night.
A slow start saw the Whites trail 3-0 at the break at Griffin Park, before Zach Clough netted a consolation from the penalty spot for Jimmy Phillips’ side.
Still without a win from their travels so far this season, Trotter insisted the Whites would be doing their utmost to end the run before the end of the season.
“First half we let them get on top far too easily,” the midfielder admitted to bwfc.co.uk “They dominated us, they played through us and we gave away three goals from just not defending well enough.
“We should have done better and that’s what lost the game for us. Second half we gave it a good go and created a couple of chances, but we had already lost the game in the first half.
“We did improve after the break. We played in their half more and got the ball forward quicker but it was too little too late.
“Maybe if we had got the second we could have made it a bit more of a battle, but it didn’t come.”
He continued: “We’ve got to keep going and we’ve got to see these games out. We need to collect out as many points as possible and build momentum.
“As a senior player we have to look to guide and encourage the younger players. We need to set a good example.
“We’ve got young lads in this team and a few debuts are being handed out. We’ve got to give them confidence and really help them out in the team.
“We have to be confident that we can win away from home. There is no reason why it can’t happen, but we have to improve our performances.
“We can’t start like we did tonight if we want to go to Derby and get something from the game, let alone a win.”
Trotter also took the opportunity to apologise after himself and David Wheater were disciplined for an incident which took place prior to kick-off at Griffin Park.
“I would like to apologise for something David and I did before the game. It was in no way, shape or form aimed at the club or the fans.
“It was a silly prank that we did not realise was going out live, but that does not excuse it. We should know better and I apologise on behalf of both of us.”
