Web host 123-reg deletes sites in clean-up error

Web hosting firm 123-reg has accidentally deleted an unspecified number of its customers' websites.

The company, which hosts 1.7m sites in the UK, said an error made during maintenance "effectively deleted" what was on some of its servers.

"We can conclude that the issues faced have resulted in some data loss for some customers," the firm admitted.

It started a "recovery process", but advised customers with their own data backup to rebuild their own websites.

The web host, which has 800,000 customers in the UK, would not say how many websites had been deleted but said it was a "small proportion".

What went wrong?

Websites are hosted on computers called servers that can dish up pages to thousands or millions of people at the same time.

Some people pay for a private server - a dedicated computer that hosts only their website - but this can be expensive.

A cheaper option is a virtual private server (VPS) - a machine that can host hundreds of websites, but mimics the functionality of a private server.

The company said it was performing a "clean up" operation on its VPS systems when an coding error in its software "effectively deleted" customer websites.

Since the maintenance mistake was made on a virtual private server it was able to wipe out many websites in one go.

123-reg told the BBC it did not have a backup copy of all its customers' data, but was working with a data recovery specialist to "manage the process of restoration".

"Our VPS product is an unmanaged service and we always recommend that customers implement backups to safeguard against unexpected issues," the company said.

"Customers who had purchased 123-reg backups can be online now."

"Many of our customers keep their own backups."

The data loss has left the affected online businesses without a website to trade from and 123-reg has been flooded with messages on social media criticising its limited communication.

One customer noted: "Fault still described as 'VPS connectivity issues' when in fact it seems they lost everything."

"There must be some information available right? What exactly are they working on?" asked another. "We need details as we need to start planning on how to salvage anything."

"This will wreck my business and plenty of others," said another affected company.

In an email sent to customers on Sunday, 123-reg said it had "begun copying recovered VPS images to new hosts" and expected some websites to be restored overnight.

It said it would audit all its automated scripts and prevent customer websites from being deleted without human approval in the future.

"The fault was limited to 67 servers out of 115,000 across Europe," the company said.

"We are investigating the restoration of each VPS on a case-by-case basis and are working individually with customers to keep them informed of the website recovery process."

Will BA return?

What will happen to all the fake accounts like the man-child Kennster (why was his twitter account taken down - he kept very quiet about that!) and the bizarre pretend Scottish woman who says she become a Bolton fan because she follows Lennon but still remains even though he's been fired, and grooms the gormless welsh numpty who has over the years grown from posting childish animations to now posting childish film clips instead!

Will Manny save the day or is this opportunity for him to pull the plug on his own forum that even he as the site owner can't be arsed to post on?

Is the Walking Dead forum finally dead?

Sad to see the demise of our former ' go to ' footy forum but the damage was done a few years ago when Manny decided to go it alone.

I stopped posting on BA when Nuts was set up. I think Angry Dad used to post on BA when he got banned from Nuts. I'm sure that any influx of new members with dubious titles will be viewed with suspicion by the mods.

Like Norpig I was BBC 606 member and still am a JA606 member (although I don't post there as much as I used to because almost no one does) but I'm still sad to see any BWFC foum die especially when it doesn't appear to have been the forum's fault. That said I did take a peek at BA and at Bolton Banter and found both to be even more 'clique-ish' than here which is really saying something.

Sadly I think the lowering number of posters on all the BWFC forums is down to the fact that there's not much new to say about the club itself. There's so little to cheer about and so little real information coming out of the Macron that we've spent the last six months if not longer rehashing stuff we've already done to death over and over again. Morale is on the floor and as a result people just can't be bothered to get worked up about stuff right now. Maybe next season will be more lively. I hope so.

Some poor responses on here. Aside from an 'inter forum war' - embarrassing. Somebody's just lost a lot of hard work and history. I hope they can recover it.

In all seriousness, if he hasn't got a backup (from knowing him personally he will have) then more fool him as it really is the number one thing to do in the I.T world mate.

Aye, but the majority of sites are backed up to a server.. like the one 1-2-3 reg have just deleted. Fingers crossed he has, but wouldn't surprise me if not.

But that isn't a backup though is it.

As you have said, the backup is on the same server that the website that is active on.  This is a really stupid way and isn't a backup.

A backup needs to be on a different medium and separate from a situation like this.

I get this a lot with customers and staff when I ask them if they have a backup of their data, they say it is on their external hard drive but I ask them if the same data is on their main hard drive as well then and they say no, it is all just on my external.

How can that be a backup then, Jeez. Smile

Inter forum war - don't make me laugh.

The owner of the site - Chris Mann has long since given up caring about the forum he started, never mind the content that is posted on there - so if he couldn't give a fuck about his own creation then why should anyone else give a toss about it either?

All he's ever bothered himself about for the last few years is the money he makes off BA from the advertising based on the number of 'hits' or 'clicks' the site receives.

That is why he's been happy enough to let bizarre wum accounts infest what remains of a once cracking forum that for a while rivalled and bettered any other BWFC forum out there.

He's let the forum go to the dogs because he lost interest in it himself and as a result any decent genuine poster as long since abandoned ship from there and post elsewhere now and have done for a long time now (including here on Nuts).

BA has gone down the shitter so long ago now that no one from any other forum has even noticed it has disappeared and no one has even contacted BA via Facebook or Twitter to ask why they can't get onto the forum or when it will be back up and running again!

For what it is worth I built BA from virtually nothing - just for the laughs.  I put hundreds if not thousands of hours into it - for free - and the thanks I got was to be stabbed in the back, dumped without any warning what so ever as a mod, ultimately banned entirely from BA and at one time even blocked as a guest to even view the bloody site!

If anybody lost "a lot of hard work and history" on BA it was I- when the owner decided he could do a better job himself.

Well he found out the hard way he couldn't.

All water under the bridge now and Nuts has long since surpassed BA in terms of the quality and quantity of banter and in sheer volume of post made.

BA was dead a long time ago and this accidental deletion has simply put it out of its misery.

Maybe Manny will resurrect it but it certainly is looking he is in no rush to do so, nor tell anyone by twitter, facebook, or even posting on other forums what the position is and what he is planning to do.

The ball is in his court that is even if he even gaves a fuck about it anymore.
