It's a case of so far, so good, for Phil Parkinson as he gets to know his players at closer proximity on tour in Sweden.
The pre-season melting pot will help forge a team to compete in League One this season and the new manager is happy with what he has seen in the first couple of weeks.
Parkinson and his players flew out on Sunday to their Scandinavian base and will play their first competitive friendly over the bridge in Denmark on Saturday.
Until then, the Whites boss will be looking to put his mark on a team which is desperate to bounce back from last season’s disappointments.
“So far we’ve been pleased,” he told the club. “Each day you get to know the players more, they are getting to know the staff. These trips are important because you have that intense period of time together and also you can monitor the players in terms of what they are eating, they can get extra sessions into the players as well so hopefully we’ll have a beneficial week.
“The base, the foundations are made for the season, not just with fitness in mind but also the way we are going to play.
“It forms spirit among the players as well, which is absolutely crucial.
“There are a lot of factors we have to improve on but we’ll enjoy that and hopefully by the time we get to the first week of the season we’ll have a team out on the pitch which is capable of being successful.”
Parkinson has already called on two reinforcements, Mark Beevers and Chris Taylor, and is set to fly in a third on Thursday, Jamie Proctor, whose switch was confirmed on Wednesday.
Wanderers have been warned this could be a summer of significant change, with movement in both directions over the coming months as the club looks to bring its costs under control.
Skipper Darren Pratley has been given permission to speak with QPR about a potential move, while Conor Wilkinson and Francesco Pisano could soon join Tyler Garratt in heading out of the club.
Parkinson is keen to learn all he can during the trip but feels the club is heading in the right direction on recruitment matters.
“Obviously it’s important in the first couple of weeks to assess everything and make sure we’re making the right decisions,” he said.
“We knew a lot about the players before we came in and spent time watching the games from last season but it’s different when you see the players on the training pitch first-hand.
“We’re trying to get to know them all, and enjoying it, but equally trying to bring players in and add to the squad.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do before I am happy with the squad. I am constantly thinking and having chats with Steve (Parkin) and the rest of the staff about what we need to do.
“We’re working on many angles to improve the squad but it’s an ongoing process.
“We knew there was a lot of work to be done when we came in and I’m confident we’ll achieve it.”
