What about people who use them for their actual purpose?

As a former petty criminal, I find the rise of the selfie-stick abhorrent.

I used to do a roaring trade in cameras and mobile phones stolen from gullible tourists who asked me to take their picture.

Since selfie-sticks appeared my supply chain's gone to shit.

Most new phones you can make a gesture to the camera and it takes the picture. So all you really need is a stick.
