I would suggest that Boris is currently toxic so no, having seen Gove stab Boris in the back so publicly I would say another no. Leadsome is my guess for the one who might make the cut.Reebok Trotter wrote:Will she find room in her new cabinet for the three Brexiteers, Boris, Gove and Leadsom?

May will pick whoever she thinks will do the best job regardless of affiliation IMO. Unlike previous PMs she doesn't have a load of hangers-on to give jobs to and she has a reputation for being all business. That said she also has form as a pragmatist so there may be a token appointment if it will shut the Leave campaign up for the time being.

She'll give Boris a job like Culture Secretary where he can't do to much damage.

October 20th is the date of the next European Council meeting so she has until then to pick a Cabinet, work out what trade deals we are likely to get, agree some policies, and invoke Article 50.
I heard that a team of around 300 British negotiators are now hard at work trying to cut deals with all the countries in the EU and elsewhere - which is infuriating the EU even more.
Junckers and Tusk clearly want to speak for the EU with one voice when we finally get around to negotiating the terms of our exit (probably on the 20th/21st October) whereas we want to cut private deals with all the major players before we even get to the table.
Everything depends on these negotiations IMO.

Since all 27 member states have to unanimously agree to any deal we make there is simply no point to any private negotiations with individual countries at this time. Of course we're free to talk to and arrange deals with non EU countries but that's a different issue.
It won't matter what private deals we may offer, any one country within the EU can now veto any deal we make and you'd better believe France and Germany in particular will want to smack us down hard if only to discourage any further exits while Poland isn't exactly going to go out of its way to be nice to us either. Frankly all this talk about getting a good deal is so much hot air because France, Germany, Italy and Spain have all stated they won't even talk to us until after Article 50 is invoked.

Surely it's the whingeing Remainers, who won't accept the democratic result of the referendum, that she needs to "shut up" if she wants unity. There needs to be overall balance in her choices.wanderlust wrote:... she also has form as a pragmatist so there may be a token appointment if it will shut the Leave campaign up for the time being.
In many respects, things already look brighter than some of the doom-mongers predicted. Extremes on either side of politics are never desirable. Gove, Johnson, Cameron and (hopefully) Osborne will all now surely testify to that. May's moderation will prove valuable for the country, I think.

They only have to agree unanimously to the terms of EU exit but the trade deals that kick in once we're out have to be negotiated individually.luckyPeterpiper wrote:Since all 27 member states have to unanimously agree to any deal we make there is simply no point to any private negotiations with individual countries at this time. The smart thing to do is get all those deals in the bag before we go for A50 because they will determine the basis for consent for the EU exit agreement.
In simple terms, if we have a good deal in place with Poland which will benefit Poland as well as us, and that deal is dependent on us getting X, Y and Z in the exit negotiations then Poland will use their veto if France and Germany try to prevent us from getting X, Y and Z. And so will others if we already have the deals in place.
That is how business is done. Everything is arranged and agreed on the golf course beforehand - the actual meeting is simply paying lip service to process and to provide a show for those out of the loop.
So there is every reason to hold private negotiations first. We'd be idiots not to ensure that we know the result of the EU exit negotiations before they take place.

I'd just like to say that the early Cabinet appointments are genius.
A woman that looks and talks with confidence like Thatcher is just what the world's media wants, but that could only be topped by making the fat scarecrow on a bike Foreign Minister, throwing him limitless opportunities to flounce and try to look appealing to foreigners in an apologetic kind of way. Plus making the guy who planned the Tories' austerity budget in charge of the money and a Brexiteer in charge of exiting the EU.
Heaven forfend but that could just stimulate the markets.
It's a plan, but I'm not sure where it'll take us. But in the world of money, having a plan of any sorts pushes up the value.
